I edit grant applications for artists and academics, and, for academics, I also edit journal articles, book chapters, minigraphs and monographs, and promotion and tenure dossiers, with a special emphasis on the health sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
My Schedule
Please note that my freelancing schedule is often booked in advance, and I am rarely able to offer turn-around times of less than one week. Should you need a rush job, I would be happy to recommend one of my colleagues.
My Services
Although I do perform more superficial copyediting and proofreading services on occasion, my specialties are in developmental, structural, and stylistic editing. I also revise formatting, figures, and tables for clarity. For authors whose voice I know well, I sometimes rewrite sections of their work, based on content and research supplied by the author. I am happy to recommend services tailored to your draft and budget.

Grant Application Editing
I have expertise in editing and formatting all components of grant applications, including editing the designs of figures, tables, and images.
For academics, I have experience editing successful grant applications for:
- SSHRC Insight & Insight Development grants
- SSHRC Partnership & Partnership Development grants
- CIHR Project & New Investigator grants
- MSFHR Scholar & Reach Programs
- Internal, institutional seed, SoTL, teaching & learning, partnership, dissemination, and scholar grants
For artists, I have experience editing successful grant applications for the Canada Council for the Arts and the Vancouver Foundation.

Manuscript Editing
I edit research publications in education, the health sciences, and the social sciences and humanities.
For academics, I bring expertise in stylistic and structural editing, including shaving down the word count in too-long manuscripts. By shifting words within sentences and sentences within paragraphs, I can enable your writing to hit its most emphatic points in the most strategically important parts of your document. I edit draft journal articles, book chapters, minigraphs, monographs, and other research manuscripts.
For journal publishers, I provide copyediting services.
Promotion and Tenure Documents
I provide developmental, structural, and stylistic editing, as well as coaching and writing support, for academics pursuing tenure or promotion. I edit research statements, teaching statements, appendices, and CVs. I have experience supporting academics who have created both paper and digital P&T dossiers. Usually, the total cost for my support with these dossiers comes in around or just under $2,000 CDN + GST.
My Rates
My rate is $80CDN/hour + GST, payable by email money transfer. I follow Amy Eihsohn’s guidelines for double-spaced pages per hour edited.
Please note that Eihsohn’s guidelines apply strictly to copyediting; if I judge that your text would also benefit from stylistic, structural, or developmental copyediting, the rate that I’m able to quote will be slower than the above table lists.

For an estimate of the cost of your project, please provide the following:
- The length of the project (in number of words).
- The date by which you require the work returned to you.
- The kind of editing you need (i.e., work on grammar & word choice, or more substantive, structural feedback).
- Any concerns or details about areas of weakness in your writing.
- A short sample (5-10 pages) of the work to be edited.
Grad Students
Graduate students, please note that I follow Editors Canada’s Guidelines for Ethical Editing of Theses / Dissertations to ensure the academic integrity of your work.
Because I work part-time at the University of British Columbia, I am unable to provide editing services for any UBC graduate students.
How to Hire an Editor
Not sure that I’m the right person to support you? Or do you work in a discipline that I’m not best-positioned to support? Or are you a UBC grad student for whom I’m not going to provide support? If this sounds like you, please check out my “how to hire an editor” resource.
